Romeo and Juliet Act 5, Scene 2 Full Summary| Romeo and Juliet Act 5, Scene 2 Summary
Friar John goes to the door of Friar Laurence’s cell (small room). Friar John calls out, “Holy Franciscan friar! brother, ho!”
Friar Laurence has been expecting Friar John. Friar Laurence welcomes Friar John back from Mantua and asks what Romeo says or writes
Friar John says he never went to Mantua. He had gone to a house to get another friar to go with him. There was sickness in the house, and health officials were afraid the disease would spread.
They would not let the friars leave. They did not even let Friar John send a messenger to Friar Laurence to give back Friar Laurence’s letter which he had written to Romeo.
Friar John gives back the letter that Friar Laurence had written telling Romeo of the plan to make it look like Juliet had died and then to take her to Mantua.
Friar Laurence says it is “unhappy fortune” that his important letter had not been taken to Mantua. There is now “much danger.” Friar Laurence tells Friar John to go quickly to get him an iron crowbar.
Friar Laurence talks to himself. He says he will go to the tomb by himself. Juliet will wake up in three hours. She will be very angry to learn that Romeo does not know about their plan for her to pretend to die and then go to Mantua, but the Friar says he will write again to Romeo.
The Friar will tell Romeo that he will keep Juliet hidden in his cell (room) until Romeo can come to Verona to get Juliet. (The Friar does not know that Romeo is already on his way to Verona to join Juliet in the tomb.)
Then the Friar thinks about Juliet and says, “Poor living course, closed in a dead man’s tomb!” (It is terrible to think of Juliet being a living corpse, having looked dead, but then waking up to find herself alone and unable to get out of a tomb full of dead bodies.)
