Let’s Start…

Romeo and Juliet Act 4, Scene 2 Full Summary| Romeo and Juliet Act 4, Scene 2 Summary

Juliet’s father, Lord Capulet, has decided there will be a wedding. He has prepared a list of people he wants to invite. He gives the list to a serving-man.

After the first serving-man leaves to invite guests, Capulet gives instructions to the second serving-man to go and get 20 good cooks.

This serving man says that he will test the cooks to see if they will lick their fingers Capulet asks why that would be a test.

This serving-man says that only bad cooks would say no. Good cooks would lick their fingers because they know their cooking tastes good.

Capulet tells the serving man to go and get the cooks. He says that the Capulet house is “unfurnished” (unprepared) for his daughter’s big wedding.

Capulet asks the Nurse if his daughter has gone to see Friar Laurence. She says Juliet has gone to see Friar Laurence.

Capulet says the Friar may “do some good.” Capulet says, “A peevish self-will’d harlotry it is. “(He calls his daughter “it” as if she were a baby and means she is stubborn and always in a bad mood.)

The Nurse sees Juliet coming and tells Capulet that Juliet is coming with a happy look on her face. (Juliet is pretending to be happy, just as Friar Laurence told her to do.) Capulet calls Juliet his “headstrong daughter” and asks where she has been.

Juliet says she has been to a place where she has learned that it is against God’s will for her to be disobedient to her father. She says Friar Laurence has told her to fall on her knees and ask for her father’s forgiveness.

Juliet falls to her knees and says, “Pardon, I beseech you! Henceforward I am ever ruled by you.” (Forgive me. I beg you. From now onI will be ruled by you.)

Lord Capulet is very happy. He says they must send a message to County Paris that Juliet has agreed to the wedding. Capulet says that he wants “this knot knit up tomorrow morning.” (He is going to move the wedding to the next day – Wednesday, instead of Thursday.)

Juliet tells her father that she had met County Paris at Friar Laurence’s room. She says she showed Paris the proper amount of love. Her father tells her he is glad and tells her to stand up.

Capulet says that now everything is the way it should be. County Paris should be sent for, and the city of Verona should be thankful that it has Friar Laurence’s help.

Juliet asks the Nurse to go with her to Juliet’s closet to help her pick out the clothes and “ornaments” that will “furnish” Juliet at the
wedding.

Read:

Lady Capulet says they can wait to pick out Juliet’s clothes and jewelry because the wedding will be on Thursday. Lord Capulet says that the wedding will be the next day Wednesday. Juliet and the Nurse leave.

Lady Capulet says it is already near night. They will not be ready for a wedding celebration tomorrow. Lord Capulet says he will take care of
everything, and everything “shall be well,” He tells Lady Capulet to go to Juliet to help “deck her up” (decorate her with clothes and jewelry).

Time is very important in Romeo and Juliet. If Juliet were not being forced into marrying Paris, she and Romeo could wait for Friar Laurence to talk everyone into accepting their marriage. Maybe, after some time had passed, Prince Escalus would let Romeo come back to Verona.

Maybe, Juliet could move to Mantua to live with Romeo. The problem is that there is no time to work on a solution to their problem of marrying without the permission of their families.

At the end of this scene, time is passing too quickly – Juliet must drink the sleeping liquid one night before Friar Laurence had planned for her to take it.
