The First Witch calls out to her spirit friend that lives in a cat, “l come, Graymalkin!” The Second Witch says Paddock (her spirit friend that lives in a toad) is calling her. The Third Witch calls out to tell her spirit friend that she, too, is coming.

All of the witches chant (say in an almost singing voice), “Fair is foul, and foul is fair:/ Hover through the fog and filthy air.” They leave.

Note: When the witches say “fair is foul,” they mean that the good things people like are the things disliked by the witches. When they say “foul is fair,” they mean that the bad things people dislike are the things liked by the witches.
